LIVE LIKE AN ASYLUM SEEKER FOR A WEEK CHALLENGE

Sunday 17th June to Saturday 24th June 2007 (Refugee Week)

Why do people who have fled persecution, torture, war and oppression to seek safety in Australia find themselves homeless and hungry in one of the world’s richest countries?
The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is challenging all people in our community especially all Federal and State MP’s and Senators to take our challenge to live like an Asylum Seeker For A Week as a way to educate and raise awareness about the destitution that asylum seekers are forced to live in by our government.

Come to the official launch of the new ASRC!

We are officially launching the new ASRC building at 12 Batman Street, West Melbourne on Sunday the 24th of June.  We are holding a Global Fair, one massive street party with food and clothing stores and activities for kids. Its on from 10am to 4pm, a great day to come with friends or family.

Sleepout to end poverty for asylum seekers a success!

On Friday the 18th of May 2007, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre organized a sleepout for the night in front of the offices of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. The aim of the night was to raise government. community and media awareness of the desperate plight that so many asylum seekers find themselves in due to our government policies.  The protest was in particular against the deliberate policies of destitution of the Howard Government that force the majority of asylum seekers into poverty, homelessness and isolation by denying them the right to work, health care and an income.

The sleepout was a wonderful night, with over 100 people attending and together holding a peaceful protest that raised community awareness about this great injustice!

World Refugee Day Rally this Sunday!

This Sunday is World Refugee Day! The plight of asylum seekers in Australia have only continued to worsen under the Howard Government. We still have mandatory detention, Temporary Protection Visas, the creation of new detention centres and thousands of asylum seekers forced to live in the community with no income, health care or the right to work. ASRC has new home!

The ASRC on the 4th of June 2007 moved into new premises at 12 Batman Street, West Melbourne, just 100 metres from our previous centre.  We are next door to St. James Old Cathedral.  
The move to our new building at 12 Batman Street, West Melbourne has been a terrific success.  All the months of planning and hard work have paid off with the first week in our new building running as smoothly as you could wish for so early on.
The new builing is beautiful, from the gorgeous colours, lovely meals area for people, the fantastic natural light that covers the whole building, the fab new self – serve foodbank, the women’s room, the lovely open spaces, the great outdoor area with fountain and pond and soon to be peace garden on the first floor.
Thank you to everyone who helped in one way or another with the move.  I am working on a final costing of what the move would have cost without people’s donations and volunteer labour, the fnal figure will be well over $400,000.00.  We have done the entire move and refurbishments on just $20,000! And with donations from volunteers the move has cost the ASRC nothing in the end!

ASRC turns 6!

The ASRC turned 6 on Friday the 8th of June. It humbles me to see what an extraordinary place that it has become and also saddens me that we are still needed 6 years later. We had a lovely huge party for asylum seekers and volunteers to celebrate the occasion.
I just want to say thank you to all the friends of the ASRC for their unflinching loyalty and terrific support over the last 6 years, we would not still be standing if not for your compassion, solidarity and committment.
