Good news stories
The next time anyone asks you what people seeking asylum have to offer Australia, here are 3 stories that show the richness of what they give to our country and how lucky we are:
1. Tesfaye W Jiru comes 4th in the Melbourne Marathon
Just a few months ago Tesfaye was seeking asylum, homeless and facing prison if forced to return to Ethiopia. The ASRC found him housing and won him asylum. We also sponsored Tesfaye to run in the Melbourne Marathon.
Yesterday, in a world class field from 64 countries, Tesfaye ran an incredible 4th in the Melbourne Marathon - what an achievement! You can read his story in The Age online.
2. Muzzamil Haniffa saves an unconscious woman from oncoming train
Muzzamil Haniffa sought asylum from Sri Lanka a few years ago, and in 2006 the ASRC won it for him.
As reported in The Melbourne Times on the 8th of October, Muzzamil, along with another man, pulled an unconscious woman from the path of an oncoming train at the West Richmond train station. At the time they did this they were right near the tunnel with trains about to arrive.
Muzzamil states:
'We were hoping that they had been stopped. Otherwise we would have been killed ourselves'.
That says it all.....
3. Adnan playing for Australia in the Homeless World Cup
Adnan was featured in The Age recently (name mispelt in article, he's the man with dreadlocks in the photo), as he is playing in the Australian team as part of the Homeless World Cup due to be a gifted soccer player.
What a talent he is!
