What makes a good volunteer
Being a volunteer at the ASRC is both satisfying and rewarding. It also gives you the opportunity to meet and work alongside some great like-minded people. The reason that the ASRC is such an inspiring place to volunteer is that every member of the workforce works collectively towards the common goal of aiding and supporting asylum seekers. For this reason there are a few attributes that help make a good volunteer.
Volunteering requires a strong commitment to the welfare of asylum seekers and the values of the ASRC. The ASRC asks volunteers for a commitment of at least 12 months, however we understand that time may be needed off for holidays and study requirements etc. While you don’t need to be an expert on asylum seeker issues, a willingness to learn and to help in whatever way possible is beneficial – not only for yourself, but also the centre. It is important to note that while you may request a role in a particular program, you may be required to volunteer in a different area. This flexibility is vital to the smooth running and effectiveness of the ASRC and how we aid and support asylum seekers.
A good volunteer “is somebody who’s willing to take responsibility, who really gets passionate about what they’re doing, who’s really able to take it and run with it,” says Gavin, the Employment Program Coordinator. “Being able to stay calm and friendly about things and…give” is also important says Peter, the Operations Manager at the ASRC.
The ability to take initiative is also highly regarded at the centre. “Somebody who’s creative and…who doesn’t need to be told exactly what to do but can think up solutions by themselves,” says Gavin.
While these attributes make up a good volunteer, we also understand the need to have some fun and enjoy the work. Patrick, the ASRC Foodbank Coordinator believes “good volunteers find joy and stimulation in connecting with asylum seekers,” while Sue from the kitchen says it’s important to be “willing to have a bit of a laugh.”
Volunteering at the ASRC can be a fun, rewarding experience and we require people with an open mind and willingness to be a member of the team.
