Volunteer positions

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the ASRC. As a volunteer, you are joining a movement of supporters and advocates who strengthen the organisation while creating positive change for people seeking asylum.

We are currently accepting applications for the roles listed below – nearly all of which have multiple positions available!

Please note that most volunteer roles at the ASRC ask for a commitment of one shift/week, ideally for 12 months. Roles that can either fully or partly be done remotely/outside of business hours are highlighted by

  • Intake / Welfare Support

    Social Work Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – Join our amazing team of qualified social workers, caseworkers and psychologists and assist people seeking asylum with intake assessments, information provision, referrals, casework and other support.

    Hub Triage Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – Assist people seeking asylum presenting to the ASRC’s Innovation Hub to identify the right support pathways for them. 

    Reception Volunteers – Dandenong (multiple roles available!) – We’re looking for people with social work experience to join our front desk team at our Dandenong office!

  • Office / Admin / Program Support Roles

    Operations Handyperson – Look after general repairs and upkeep so that our Footscray building and facilities are always in good condition!

    Reception Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – We are looking for people with excellent customer service skills to join our front desk team. The ability to handle challenging situations and work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment is a must. 

    Innovation Hub Reception Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – Join the front desk team in our amazing Innovation Hub! You’ll provide reception and administration services to people seeking asylum who are engaging with social activities, employment, education and our women’s and youth programs.

    Program Support Volunteers – Detention Advocacy (multiple roles available!) – Provide office-based support to our team working with people in detention centres. You’ll summarise medical records and other documents, assist with referrals and provide general assistance to our Detention Advocates.

    Program Support Volunteers – Key Supporters (multiple roles available!) – Provide a high level of care and support to key supporters and donors of the ASRC to help build the ASRC donor community.

    Donor Administration Volunteer – Join our Fundraising Team and provide vital administrative support for a growing ASRC donor base.

    Invoice Volunteer (Catering) – Assist with the accounting and bookkeeping for our growing Catering Social Enterprise.

    Data Support Volunteer – Are you great with data? This role provides operational and administrative support to our Data Management Team, including database administration and reporting.

  • Employment & Education

    VET Program Support Volunteer (multiple roles available!) – Provide administrative support to our Education Program and assist in referring people seeking asylum into education courses.

    Music Teacher Volunteer – Support people seeking asylum to share their music skills through weekly music sessions and performances. 

    Post-Placement Support Volunteer (multiple roles available!) – In this role you will provide support to people seeking asylum who are in the initial stages of new employment, to optimise their success at work. 

    Professional Mentors (multiple roles available!)  – We need professionals in specific industries to develop the knowledge and confidence of people seeking asylum to improve their potential for employment in their specific industry or profession. 

  • Campaigns & Community Organising

    Community Organisers (multiple roles available!) – Mobilise people in the community to take action on the rights of people seeking asylum, building a bigger and more diverse movement! 

    Community Organisers – Schools & Unis (multiple roles available!) – We are looking for committed and passionate people to motivate students in high schools and universities to step up, speak out & take collective action in support of people seeking asylum and refugees. 

    Community Organisers – Sydney (multiple roles available!) – Mobilise people in Sydney and NSW to take action on the rights of people seeking asylum, building a bigger and more diverse movement. 

  • Digital / Marketing

    Social Media Volunteer – Assist with creating social media macros and monitoring the ASRC’s incredible online community of almost half a million followers across 5 active social media channels.

    Web Design Volunteer – Work from our Footscray, Brisbane or Sydney office and assist our Campaigns & Organising team with web design work on NationBuilder. 

    Database Specialist Volunteer – Assist with data handling, analytics and process guides for NationBuilder. This role can be performed from our Footscray, Brisbane or Sydney offices. 

  • Community Food Program

    Harvest of Hope Garden Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – Work in a team of dedicated volunteers to grow much needed fresh vegetables for the ASRC in our Harvest of Hope market garden.

    Foodbank Food Rescue Volunteer – Help provide the main bulk of fresh food for our members each day by picking up food donations and bringing them back to ASRC Foodbank.

    Community Meals Cooking Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – Help to plan and cook meals for large groups using available produce, in collaboration with other cooking volunteers.

    Foodbank Program Support Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – Join the Foodbank Team and assist in maintaining current administrative functions and assisting the Foodbank Manager and team.

  • Health

    Registered Nurses (multiple roles available!) – As a Registered Nurse working in a small team, you will provide high quality health care within our Health Program.

    Diabetes Health Promotion & Education Volunteer – Develop a Diabetes Health Promotion Plan incorporating best practice health promotion practices for people seeking asylum.

    Psychiatrists (multiple roles available!) – As a psychiatrist working in a small team, you will provide ongoing clinical services to people seeking asylum in our Health program.

    Continuous Quality Improvement Volunteer – Work collaboratively with the Health Program to develop, implement and promote policies and procedures for the provision of high quality health care.

  • Human Rights Law Program

    Legal Caseworker Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – We are looking for qualified solicitors or barristers to provide advice to people seeking asylum as part of our Wednesday Night Legal Clinic. 

    Legal Knowledge Management Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – Catalogue important research, submissions and case law for our legal knowledge library.

    Legal Triage Paralegal Volunteers (multiple roles available!) – Join our award-winning legal team and help to manage requests for assistance from our Human Rights Law Program.
